White Teenage Couple Bizarrely Dresses As The Obamas For Prom — And It Was Freakin’ Incredible

18-year old Cassie Berta and Seth Moffitt from Bettendorf, Iowa have shown us exactly what it means to represent POC culture without attempting to appropriate it.

For those of you who do not understand, cultural appropriation is when a culture simply begins to adopt the traditions and aspects of another culture. However, in today’s society, it has earned itself a bad name because people can be bullies and utilize this appropriation as a means to make fun of or otherwise bash another culture.

So, when Seth’s prom proposal sign went viral on social media, cultures everywhere braced themselves for the racist appropriation about to occur.

What the pair wanted to do was recreate the likeness of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Specifically, the look they both had for the 36th Kennedy Center Honors Gala seen in the video below.

And they friggin’ nailed it.

Every single part of it.

Seriously. They are adorable. And not racist, which is where the distinction comes into play. However, I can’t explain it any better than Cassie already has:

“There is a fine line between white people appreciating and appropriating POC culture, specifically black culture.”

Keep rockin’ it out, you two. Thank you for giving us a wonderful example of what it means to pay tribute to a culture without bullying it in the process.
