2. Captain Robert Campbell and his honor
Today, I read about a WW1 soldier, Captain Robert Campbell. He began his British Army career when he was 18 years old in 1903. After WWI started, he and the soldiers he was leading were sent to Mons-Conde canal in France.
Unfortunately, a week after, the Germans attacked and Captain Campbell was seriously injured and was captured. He was then treated in the German military hospital in Cologne before being sent to the prisoner-of-war (POW) camp in Magdeburg, Germany.
Two years into his captivity, he received word that his mother was suffering from terminal cancer and might not last. He has nothing to lose, so he took the risk, he wrote directly to Kaiser Wilhelm II requesting for a compassionate leave so that he can visit his mother before she passed.
The Kaiser agreed and granted him 2 weeks provided that “gave his word as a British Army officer that he would return.”
So he went back to his mom and spent 1 week with her before actually going back to captivity. His Mom died in February of 1917 while he was still in POW camp.
