There’s something that sets mentalists apart from magicians and illusionists that go beyond their official definitions. While it’s true that illusionists and magicians borrow a lot of elements from mentalism to make their tricks more believable, mentalists operate on a completely different wavelength.
Personally, I feel that there’s a tiny part of myself that wants to believe in the “magic” or illusion, and that part makes the trick more exciting. However, with mentalists, I find myself feeling the opposite. I tend to resist the idea that they can know anything about me. And if you stop and think about it, most of us are this way to a certain degree. It’s common for most folks to believe that they are infinitely complicated beings who know one can completely understand. But, at the same time, we tend to think that everyone else is much easier to figure out.
I think it’s this pride in our ego that makes our minds fertile ground for talented mentalists such as the masked performer known only as “X.” This mentalist has amazed millions of folks worldwide with his mind-bending mental tricks that had left even the biggest skeptics speechless. And when we think of skeptics, perhaps the most famous skeptic of our time has to be Simon Cowell, who’s known for his withering criticism of performers who fail to live up to their hype.
However, during an X-Factor U.K episode, Cowell, his fellow judges, and the entire studio audience were taken on a wild mental ride thanks to the mysterious “X.”
During his performance, X first appeared on the big screen, where he explained how magic and the impossible are used as metaphors. He said, “It doesn’t matter how any of it is achieved, what matters is how it made you feel. My hope is that for a brief moment, you felt anything was possible.”
Now, be sure to remember those words after watching his performance because they contain a vital clue.
After the video, X appears behind Simon to scare the living daylights out of him.
X then brought everyone’s attention back to the big screen and explained that “on the screen are words that define what it means to be human.”
He then asked Simon to think of any word he saw on the screen and write ut down on a piece of paper.
Afterward, X took the center of the stage and brought out two brothers named Ant and Dec. He then asked both men to stand on either side of him.
X began his performance by asking the brothers to open their minds and be aware of their sensations.
The mentalist began with a simple priming trick in which he had both men close their eyes while he touched their nose and the top of their heads. Afterward, he asked them to raise their hand if they felt him touch those parts of their body.
Last he touched Dek’s left shoulder then asked both men if to raise their hands if they felt him touch their shoulder, and of course, both men raised their hands!
However, X wasn’t done. He then performed a spooky mind trick using a lighter and a piece of foil, in which he had Ant hold the lighter and let Dek hold the piece of foil.
Without giving away too much, you can watch the entire hair-raising performance in the video below.
Also, you’ll see how X manages to completely blow Simon’s mind with a trick he’d set up months ago.
Mentalists are indeed some of the most frightening entertainers on the planet, precisely because they understand how our minds work so well. Please be sure to pass this incredible performance onto your friends and family.
