Two years ago, Jose watched as his life fell apart. He went through a divorce and lost his home and his dog, Chaos, in the process. A friend offered to take Chaos during Jose’s difficult time, but refused to return him once Jose got back on his feet.

I didn’t think I would ever see my dog again,” Jose said. It was one of the worst feelings in the world, and unfortunately that feeling continued for two years.

But then something magical happened. A Winnebago County Services staff member was at her house when she discovered a dog in her driveway. An Animal Services Officer came out to take the dog back to the shelter. The dog was wearing a collar with a 2014 National Identification Number.

One day later, a staff member called the number associated with the ID number, and a shocked Jose picked up the phone. “Chaos?!?” he yelled excitedly before crying.

“I was speechless and I couldn’t stop smiling. I just couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t get to the shelter fast enough. I couldn’t wait for it to open so I could see Chaos.”

And as you can clearly see in the video, Chaos couldn’t wait to see him. He was a little apprehensive at first, but once he realized who it was, Chaos was unable to contain his excitement.

Jose told the staff at the shelter that this is the happiest he’s been in a long time. And the Winnebago County Animal Services hopes this story will make more people understand the importance of microchipping their pets.

“Please do not underestimate the power and importance of microchipping your pets. Jose was so nice and humble and we couldn’t be happier for him and Chaos.”
