Highschool Students Collect 10k Facemasks to Giveaway to Those in Need in Tennessee

As pandemic sets in this year, wearing facemasks outdoors has become a necessity. But not everyone can afford to buy or reserve stocks of facemasks at home. Given that poverty remains unresolved, there are still unsung heroes in every community and promises that no one will be left behind. There are private organizations, individuals, and even groups of students willing to help amidst the health crisis. A group of high school students from Tennessee started a program of sending out facemasks to those who cannot afford it. Ben Beard leads the initiative. Ben, Ty Anderson, and their classmates started collecting over ten thousands of facemasks set for those in need.

The group supposedly sets their goals by focusing on their academics and helping the community reorganize their objectives for a while due to the crisis. However, as pandemic put everything to a halt, Ben Beard found this an opportunity to give something back to their community. An initiative that does not solely aim to make their college resume a well-rounded one but merely lends a hand and makes a significant impact. Ben shared that when he heard about the mandatory wearing of facemasks to densely populated areas, he knew right then and there that it would create stress to those who are already struggling even before the pandemic.

Ben and Anderson’s Team discovered the program they call Mask Now TN, wherein they distribute facemasks to essential workers and economically depressed areas in their community. They knew then that they would need a vast number of donations. Ben and Ty started leading their fellow high schoolers who willingly offered to help. They send out a call for donation fliers online and set up specific areas for collection. Although it took the group more than a month to organize, it only took them three weeks to collect 10,000 facemasks. That’s huge!

This group of high-schoolers may seem young to most of us, but they are capable enough to take a stand and make a big difference. The monetary donations, though they find it an obstacle at first, the group organized it well.
