A glacial lake in the Himalayan mountains, known locally as “Mystery Lake” and sometimes as “Skeleton Lake,” is surrounded by the remains of nearly 300 people.
The skeletons were first discovered in the 19th century, but they did not attract worldwide attention until 1942. For decades, they remained a mystery — who were these people and how did they die?
It wasn’t until 2013 that researchers collected several of the skeletons, some with bits of flesh still somehow attached, for analysis. Carbon dating on the remains showed them to be nearly 1,250 years old!
