So holographic hair is a thing. Remember when the rainbow hair trend came out a few years ago? I was so in love with that style! And I wanted to do it, but the truth is, I couldn’t justify spending the money to have it done when I rarely leave the house. My husband says it’s not a waste if I enjoy it and I know that’s true. But there’s something else, too: I hate sitting in a stylist’s chair for hours. Now, however, there’s a trend for 2020 that I can get excited about. It’s so hot and so different that I may enjoy it even if no one ever sees it but my husband and me.
Allow me to introduce you to holographic hair. Yep, that’s right. Imagine the beauty and iridescence of a hologram and you’re wearing it around on your hair. In fact, some people are calling it “fairidescent” as a play on words, and you all know I love a delicious and delightful play on words. We’ve seen hair trends come and go, including Nordic White hair (which I loved), Milk Tea hair (meh), Mushroom Blonde hair (blech), and even the aforementioned rainbow hair. They’re all interesting, but this one appeals to me much more.
Holographic Hair Looks we Love
Beauty and hair industry experts say that holographic hair is destined to be the hottest go-to look for 2020, and why not? A hot look like this is exactly what we need after being cooped up for months, isn’t it?
Redken colorist Chiala Marvici says that the holographic hair look is achieved via a revolutionary technique called Hand-Pressed Coloring.
Marvici told Modern Salon that the technique gives you a multi-tonal and multi-dimensional effect, along with delightful diffused patterns.
Holographic hair is achieved with something you’d never suspect: Plexiglass! That’s right.
Apparently, the dye is put on the section of Plexiglas, then your hair is placed on the glass in sections, with the Plexiglass transferring the color to the customer’s hair.
The stylist then does the process over and over again on all of the sections of hair you want done, depending on the look you’re going for.
Marvici said in 2015 that this look, which was first introduced at that time, had plenty of room to evolve.
“Everything has to evolve at some point and Hand-Pressed Color is a new approach to color application. The application time is less than traditional color applications like foils and Balayage, so it saves time in the salon for both the colorist and the client.”
With this look, you have the option to go for either strong or soft and subtle results.
Quarantine has made life somewhat dull for many people, and popping out with these delightful hues will renew and energize us.
This is a Trend, of Course
Like all trends, this one will be just that: a trend. That means that it likely won’t be here to stay, but what fun we can have with it while it’s here.
I love love love this teal holographic hair look. Teal is, after all, one of my favorite colors. I guess this is a “teal.” Not sure. But I know I love it.
However, I also love this gorgeous iridescent look.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you want the softer rainbow shades, they’ll only look holographic if you already have gray or blonde hair. Talk to your stylist about going lighter before you go holographic.
Instagram is going nuts over holographic hair because of course it is.
So will I get my hair done in holographic hair? Stay tuned!
