Husband Gives His Wife The Best Gift Ever On Their 20th Anniversary – His Kidney

For their twentieth wedding anniversary, husband Scott Chafian wasn’t just satisfied with just giving his wife, Cindy, any china. No, he decided to give her an organ – well two, if you consider she already has his heart – and on January 24, on the eve of the big day, they both underwent a kidney transplant surgery … from him to her, with love.

Cindy had suffered from polycystic kidney disease and had been on dialysis for about two years. She was diagnosed with the ailment, where excessive cyst growth shuts down a kidney, when she was in her 20s and has since been suffering. Even though she had undergone a series of surgeries, she still got ever sicker. Seeing his wife in pain was something that, Scott says, was “tough.”

“It’s devastating. It was just a feeling of helplessness,” he said.

But, he couldn’t just sit back and do nothing while his wife slowly suffered and headed on into what would be the inevitable. Six years ago he offered to give her his kidney, but Cindy would not hear of it. And it was only last year, when things started going drastically downhill, that she finally relented.

She said, “I hit kind of rock bottom, and I looked at him and I said, ‘Okay, I’m ready.'”

Scott delved into getting things ready for the transplant surgery and managed to have it scheduled for the day before their anniversary. Cindy said he called and told her everything was set for the day…

“…that was the first time I allowed myself any emotion and I actually cried,” she said.

On the day of the surgery the couple was rolled into the surgery where they would remain for over four hours. When reporters caught up with them after the successful surgery, the couple was in high spirits and already had hopes for a bright future and looked forward to many more years together.

Scott was first to say that he could already see the difference the surgery had on his wife in the “light she’s got back in her eyes. I don’t even have words for it.” He said the surgery had gone well and thanked the “absolutely phenomenal” staff at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

As for Cindy, she said she was already feeling better one day in and only had surgery pains but she wasn’t complaining about those. She said she was excited and optimistic about the outcome.

Well, Scott might have nailed the perfect gift to give his wife because, she said, she wouldn’t have wanted anything more.

“I can’t think of any better place to be right now. If I had the choice to be here or in the Bahamas, I’d totally be here,” Cindy said.

Once the couple leave the hospital they intend to focus on family life and their kids’ activities which had also suffered with Cindy’s illness over the years. Friends and family have setup a GodFundMe page to help the couple financially during their time of recovery when they both won’t be able to work.
