Unchained Melody As You’ve Never Heard It Before: Kelly Clarkson Slays

One of the great voices of her generation, Kelly Clarkson is the perfect example of the kind of success that can be obtained when you have an extraordinary talent and a truly genuine personality. The world fell in love with Kelly when she became the very first winner of the hit TV show “American Idol” in 2002. Winning the contest earned Kelly a record deal with RCA, and her first single, titled “A Moment Like This,” went straight to the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The album the song was on was “Thankful,” which went to the top of the Billboard album charts.

After releasing her first album, Kelly wanted to reinvent her image, so she “broke away” from the management of “American Idol” and shifted her style to pop rock. Her second studio album was “Breakaway,” which was released in 2004. The album had four top-ten singles in the United States, including “Breakaway,” “Since You Been Gone,” “Because of You,” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes.” The album won two Grammy Awards and sold 12 million copies around the world. For her third album, “My December,” Kelly took more creative control. She re-wrote all of the tracks and acted as the album’s executive producer.

“My December” had a darker tone than we’re used to seeing from Kelly, but she returned to her light and fun roots with her fourth and fifth albums. To be honest, I love all of her music, but no one does the heartfelt songs like Kelly. I think my favorite Kelly Clarkson song is “My Life Would Suck Without You.” It’s just perfect, in my humble opinion. It has all of the excitement of a somewhat toxic relationship, which I think most people have had at one time or another (and I certainly have had!).

Below, you’ll see Kelly at her very finest as she performs that song that The Righteous Brothers made famous: “Unchained Melody.” In this video, Kelly proves that even as she’s gotten older, those high notes are still firmly within her grasp. Enjoy!

Did you hear those notes? Wow. Just wow.
