Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ Played At 33 RPM Is Surprisingly … AWESOME

“Jolene” is one of Dolly Parton’s most famous songs. Released in 1974, its upbeat tempo encourages people to tap their feet while she tells a heartbreaking story.

Jolene is a beautiful woman that’s caught the attention of Parton’s man. Claiming she pales in comparison, Parton sings:

“Your smile is like a breath of spring, your voice is soft like summer rain, and I cannot compete with you, Jolene.”

Here’s the original version:

While it’s a sad song, it’s certainly peppy enough to sway your hips to.

Slow the song down to 33 rates per minute, however, and Parton’s pleas tug at our hearts a little too much. Her voice is drawn out and even sounds a bit masculine. One could even say it’s a bit macabre.

Maybe it’s time to try that with more vinyl records, especially since they’re making a big comeback.
