Shy 13-Year-Old Turns Into a Different Person With Golden-Buzzer Performance of ‘Hard to Handle’

Courtney Hadwin, from Britain, is a 13-year-old girl who walked onto the stage for American’s Got Talent. Courtney is so nervous; she can barely get out more than one- or two-word answers when the judges ask her questions. She is advised to ignore the fact that it is a big stage.

Courtney tells the judges she is going to sing for them. She admits that music is her favorite subject in school. However, she is too nervous to elaborate on what music she loves best.

Because she is so sweet and charming, the judges do not think anything of it when Courtney takes her place on stage before the music begins.

Where Did That Come From?

There is a long and dramatic pause before the first notes of the music play. However, when the song ‘Hard to Handle’ begins and Courtney begins to dance, the judges freeze with looks of confusion. You can see this for yourself at minute 1:07.

Watching Courtney sing and dance is at complete odds with the shy 13-year-old girl who introduced herself on stage just moments ago. As soon as the shock wears off a little, the entire audience is on their feet at minute 1:32.

Courtney seems to channel her inner Janis Joplin as she owns the stage singing Otis Redding’s song, “Hard to Handle.” This song is well-known and well-covered since it was written in 1968. If there was any question whether or not Courtney can both sing and perform, it was put to rest at minute 2:15.

A Life-Changing Moment

A standing ovation from the audience and the judges is a fantastic way to cap off an audition, but for Courtney, it gets even better. At minute 3:38, Howie gives Courtney the ultimate nod of support by pressing the Golden Buzzer.
